UNESCO World Heritage Site, Boyana Church

The “Bojana Church” in the Boyana district of the city of Sofia is famous for its beautiful medieval frescoes.

It consists of a total of four buildings, the building on the east being the oldest, and then gradually expanded to the west three times in the 10th and 11th centuries, the mid-13th century, and the mid-19th century. The reason for why Boyana Cathedral is famous is due to its frescoes, which show the outstanding culture of medieval Bulgarian art. Almost all of the inner wall is covered with frescoes. The first layer of frescoes dates from the 11th and 12th centuries. The second layer is dated 1259, according to the donor's inscription left on the north wall. More than 240 people are depicted in the mural, each with their own personality, surprising psychological expressions, and realistic and vivid depictions. It is one of the most complete and perfectly preserved monuments of the Eastern European medieval art.

Boyana Church has been designated a national cultural heritage site and has been protected by the state since 1927. In 1979, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. After 10 years of restoration, it was opened in 2006 and has become a famous attraction visited by more than 200,000 people every year.
